I think with the carpet it may have been a combination of things. Lady Hilda fell on it when she pretended to faint, which presumably moved it round a bit. Then she probably pushed it out of the way, which rotated it more. When she'd grabbed the document, she would have roughly pulled the carpet into place, before running away. And then the policeman would have straightened it out afterwards, moving it further from its original position.

i had to chuckle at the Hope/mope rhyme. :) Quite ingenious. It is fascinating how the solving of the case rests on one accidental mismatch of carpet and stain.

The mismatch of the carpet and the stain on the floor certainly did help things along for Holmes, but I wonder if he would have solved the case anyway. He was already carrying Lady Hilda's picture when he went to view Lucas' home. Did he perhaps already suspect she'd taken the document from her husband's despatch-box..?

She did act stupidly. But I have some sympathy for her in her desperation. And at least she did try to put things right.
