I was surprised Miss Stapleton did not want her brother to know she wished Sir Henry to leave the Hall.  Although she had said he was very anxious that the Hall be inhabited, I could not understand why she should keep her own views quiet.  This seemed to me to be the very thing that siblings would regularly argue about.

I am convinced Holmes saw through that lie right away. Watson is just too sentimental an observer. ;) You are quite right: this is exactly what siblings would argue about.

I think Watson generally thinks the best of people, whereas Holmes looks for the flaws.

I had never thought about that. There is a very different dynamic between siblings rather than between spouses. Excellent stuff.

Siblings (especially those that get on well) rarely look for agreement and enjoy the arguing.
