Author's Notes: Inspired by this line in ch. 9 of the The Hound of the Baskervilles: '[The man] might have been the very spirit of that terrible place.'


The moor stretched darkly towards the horizon. Holmes had never considered himself a lover of the countryside. But here – atop this moon-lit tor – he saw the appeal. Above the ruins of primeval man rose the mine tower. Hidden pathways crisscrossed the granite-speckled peat. It was, Holmes thought, a place that could breed both innocence and crime, same as the city.

I like the idea of Holmes looking round and seeing the landscape as the neutral backdrop to man's actions.

I have a feeling this is the only way Holmes can appreciate landscape, at least until his retirement. :)

So atmospheric and philosophical - as your 60s often seem to be. There's so much of Watson's point of view in HOUN - it's nice to see through Holmes' eyes as well. To know what's going on in his mind at such an iconic moment in the story.

Thank you so much! I am wholly smitten with Watson's description of the man on the tor – an iconic moment, if ever there was one. Reading it, I couldn't help wondering what was going through Holmes' mind at the moment.
