Canon Story: The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge
Title: The Avenger
Author: [livejournal.com profile] vaysh
Rating: PG
Words: 60
Author's Notes: Written based on the hypothesis that the fictional San Pedro of the story was, in fact, Haiti*.

Once, he had been Félix Sumera Rigaud. The proud name of a man whose ancestors had thrown off the shackles of slavery. Now, he was Cook. There was less pride in this name but no less longing for freedom.

He'd put the clock an hour ahead on the mantelpiece. He'd made his offerings, life warm and pure. All was set.

* An interesting article about a 1864 trial shaping late 19th century attitudes towards Haiti and voodoo can be found here: The Trial that Gave Vodou a Bad Name.

Good to see some expansion of his background...he is not served well in canon.

Nicely done:-)

I read the article - very interesting. To be honest, it taught me a lot - I know next to nothing about voodoo, or Haiti ^^" And it does give a context for Holmes and Watson's reaction to voodoo practices.

I must add to the approval of your giving the man some background - a name for one thing. We're given pretty much nothing about him in the original story - you've humanised him.
