The furious tones of our landlady reached me as I started upstairs towards our rooms. I opened the door carefully, prepared to make a hasty exit should that prove necessary. The greater part of our sitting room, together with Holmes himself, was covered in soot. I tiptoed quietly away.

And can you tell me why your bolster unexpectedly sneezed when I went into your bedroom to dust this morning? You presume upon my good nature too much.”
