Author's Notes: Pre-slash Holmes/Watson. Written in response to Holmes' "Quick, man, if you love me!" Apologies for the artsy title. I've two thirds finished of a longer version, and there the title actually makes sense. ;)


Following his charade posing as a dying detective, there was a change in Holmes. I would catch him at odd moments – moments that before he had spent observing an item ostensibly plain and ordinary, or contemplating some unfathomable mystery. Now, such moments were dedicated to the observation, and – it even seemed to me, the contemplation – of none other than... myself.

I suppose your story is the opposite of what one might expect - you might expect that because Watson had been under the stress of thinking that Holmes was dying, he would be the one to come to a deeper understanding of his own feelings. But it's Holmes (perhaps because being without food and drink left him emotionally vulnerable as well as physically vulnerable) who has started to examine the depth of his affection for Watson, and Watson's affection for himself.

It always seemed to me that it is very easy for Watson to fall for Holmes; the problematic part in any Holmes/Watson that goes beyond the platonic, I see in Holmes. How could such a man who had foresworn emotions actually fall in love? To my mind, Holmes was taken by surprise at to what lengths Watson would go in the Dying Detective - even putting his own pride in being a good doctor aside and fetch a colleague he never heard of, simply because Holmes requested it. I think Holmes was humbled into reciprocating at least a bit of the feelings that Watson obviously has for him. And once he let himself feel, there was no stopping it. ;) My very personal take on things, obviously.

I've written the story out by hand but it's so fluffy I will have to work on it a bit to make it postable.
