Sherlock Holmes

The great detective, Sherlock Holmes,
will someday retire to Sussex honeycombes.
But not today, as cunning Mister Clay discovers, to his rue.
The work, dear Watson, the work c’est tout.

This is a wonderful summary of Holmes' life. And your rhyming is excellent - I am envious of your ability.

Awww - this comment makes me both nostalgic and happy. Bob Dylan has a way with words, and this quote from Hurricane is awesome.

I spent my formative teenage years (badly) translating Dylan's lyrics into German, and I am sure I learned much of my sense of English from him. He is the master, indeed.

Vor einiges Zeit sind mir meine alten Dylan-Übersetzungen wieder mal in die Hände gefallen, und ich hatte absolut wörtlich übersetzt, also: sehr schlechtes Deutsch. But I do believe that I got a much more lyrical way into the English language than if I had only read novels. :)

Gorgeous. Rhyming Holmes with Sussex honeycombes is just ingenious and so precious. I love how you took up the Flaubert quote from the story to make this perfect point about Watson. Kudos!

*now can't stop thinking about a case involving Watson and a dachshund*

Well, I've written two clerihews for Dr. Watson, and came up with the rhymes "hot sun" and "plots on" :P ("Showing off"..? I've no idea what you mean...) Is "John Watson, M.D." cheating? Well, I would say that if you come up with a great rhyme for "M.D." no-one is going to care one way or the other ^___^

If you consider some of the dubious rhymes we've used I think most things are fair game. It's not as if there's any competition, just entertainment.

Anyone who can work French into a clerihew and have it feel like it communicates something a mere English translation wouldn't deserves a hearty huzzah in my book. Nicely done on all of this.
