The illness crept up on her, thread by thread: crowding her throat then closing it, in spite of steamy rooms and industrious doctors.

Death crept up on us, hour by hour: it overtook us in the night.

Very impressive, what you've done with a single sentence from canon, giving the daughter's death the respect it deserves.
