Date: 2014-08-21 06:04 pm (UTC)I admit I was wholly confused by the name of Colonel Lysander stark. "Lysander" is by no means a common German name, and then Elise calls him "Fritz" in English, but Fritz would be Fred in English. Stark could well be a German name, though. *confused*
Re: Colonel Lysander Stark
Date: 2014-08-21 09:04 pm (UTC)I wonder what languages Elise speaks. "Elise" could be French or German I suppose? However, though Hatherley recognises Stark's accent as German, he refers to the language that Elise uses to first talk to Stark as merely a "foreign tongue". Which suggests to me that it isn't German (or French either) as Hatherley would have recognised it as such, even if he couldn't understand what was being said.
And it's odd that Elise uses English (a language she doesn't speak well) to beg Stark not to kill Hatherley. It's a highly stressful situation - you would think she would automatically use her native language or use German as it's Stark's. So perhaps Stark only speaks a little of Elise's language, and she doesn't speak German at all - perhaps they generally use English to communicate with each other (and the Englishman too, of course).
And I can only assume Elise calls Stark "Fritz" no matter what language she's speaking.
