So Robert had found another heiress to marry. Flora tucked the newspaper away.

Though her fiancé wouldn’t be jealous. It was strange—she felt nothing for Lord St. Simon now. Instead she had Jem, who had asked if she would do him the honour of becoming his wife.

After all this time, she had finally managed to find a gentleman.

I suppose we shouldn't view Miss Millar purely as a victim - to a certain extent she would have known what she was getting into. But Lord St. Simon did truly seem to think she was making a fuss over nothing. But I imagine she must be a beautiful woman - I'm sure she would have other admirers.

I absolutely love how you used the word "gentleman" here, finally, in a sense that does justice to the word and to the man who is called a gentleman. I hope very much this is how life went for Flora.

Lord St. Simon is rather a snob - referring to when he sees Moulton in the church (before he knows who he is), he says he only calls him a gentleman out of courtesy; he was "a common-looking person". And he does look down a little on Hatty for her upbringing, and because she comes from a background of new money.

But, of course, being a true gentleman is about how you behave - and I don't think St. Simon is ever a true gentleman to poor Flora, however he feels about her.
