Author's Notes: …Sherlock Holmes… dipped rapidly into the bundle of fresh papers... We had left Reading far behind us before he thrust the last one of them under the seat, and offered me his cigar-case.


“Look!” said the first cleaner, pulling out newspapers from under the carriage seat.

“And there’s ash and cigar stubs everywhere,” said the second.

Mrs. Fields sighed. “Passengers! Bet you wish you were in London instead, Mrs. Turner—helping your sister Mrs. Hudson.”

“Gracious, no,” her workmate answered. “Apparently she hasn’t managed to find Mr. Holmes’ sitting room floor since 1882.”

*snort* But I hope Mrs Hudson was exaggerating; otherwise they'd be losing clients in the undergrowth.

I admit, I always thought that when Holmes was away for a few days, he'd come back to find Mrs Hudson had comitted what Hawkeye Pierce would call a neatness.

I don't think Mrs. Hudson would ever dare to move his case files though. And maybe they did lose clients in the undergrowth... (^__^)

It's the way that Holmes treats the carriage as though it's his own home that made the connection for me ^_^ And how lovely to see you around the comm again ^^

I imagine Mrs Hudson to be the kind of landlady who keeps her own quarters meticulously clean but is content to let her lodgers accumulate books, papers and cigar smoke, as long as she can do a dusting every once in a while. :)

Yes - and we do know that Holmes paid a generous amount of rent, which would have helped ^^ (When he eventually moved out, she probably used the money to completely rebuild the upper floors ^__^)
