It was entirely typical of Holmes, that while I was admiring the scenery as we journeyed through the Wiltshire countryside, he would be calculating the speed at which the train was travelling. It is true that there were occasions when he would admire the intricacies of an individual flower, but the overall swathe of trees and fields left him unmoved.

Date: 2014-08-31 02:31 pm (UTC)I couldn't help but think that Holmes's little exercise sounded like those word problems that involve trains traveling at various rates of speed, where you have to figure out which train will arrive at a certain point first. (Though of course here it was the rate of speed that needed to be determined.) Those always made my eyes glaze over. Holmes, on the other hand, probably works them out in his head as a warm-up before breakfast. :-p
