Forcing the door open was a matter of seconds. Even though I didn’t bother to bring along my pickpocket tools, Watson is not so irresponsible and carries his old service revolver on himself all the time. From the state of the room, the window violently broken into, everything can be told.

Not good.

Still not a perfect locked room mystery.

It is interesting choosing to look at this moment through Holmes' eyes, because you do have to wonder what was going through his mind. He seems to immediately jump to completely the wrong conclusion despite the evidence.

Honestly, I think that Holmes is just looking forward to encounter the locked room mystery which would challenge his reasoning one day. Up to this point, every promising case had some sort of a flaw.
