Author's Notes: …Sherlock Holmes… turned back to the great scrapbook in which he was arranging and indexing some of his recent material... The two forces made him lay down his gum-brush…



Holmes finished pasting material into his scrapbook, and then steepled his hands underneath his chin in a familiar gesture. I knew better than to disturb my friend when he was thinking and so I turned my attention to my newspaper.

An hour later, Holmes sighed.

“You’ve solved the problem?” I asked.

“No,” said Holmes. “My hands are still stuck together.”
