It was a couple of weeks later that we were visited by another young lady who had fainted on the Brixton omnibus.  Holmes assured her that the rat was purely being polite when he raised his hat to her and had no intention of causing her any harm.  I am not at all sure that the young lady was convinced.

I knew that someone would come up with the background story for why young ladies were fainting in Brixton omnibuses. This is, of course, the most charming of explanations (even when the lady in question did not appreciate a polite rat).
