It would be interesting to retell ILLU from the POV of Holmes, or even of Kitty herself. Watson never really knows fully what's going on and, apart from the ending, most of it is happening "offstage" for him.

There's that interesting contrast between Miss Winter and Miss de Merville: Kitty is full of heated rage but also full of cold "sin and sorrow"; Violet is apparently passionately in love but is so cool and aloof.

Clearly, ACD did not give Kitty that name by coincidence, no matter all his fiery descriptions of her. You clerihew brought out wonderfully why.

That choice of surname is highly suggestive in context - and ACD does describe Miss Winter initially as: "a slim, flame-like young woman with a pale, intense face." (My italics.) You immediately have that contrast. And though her anger and frustration come through, I can't help but feel that at her core she's cold and dispassionate, in order to protect herself.
