Author's note: I have wanted to use this title, and something like this scenario, for a while - and hope I've done justice to some of that great contrast we see when we're first introduced to Mycroft. (The snow experiment is inspired by long, amusing conversations with my boyfriend.)
They made a wonderful contrast - the elder brother sitting silently, thinking through whatever problems his tutors set for him, or poring too rapidly over volumes, a far-away look in his eyes, while his younger brother got the house in an uproar sneaking gas from the lamps to set snow alight or conduct some similar experiment to satisfy his curiosity.
