“And then, Lestrade, we will take the London fog out of your throat by giving you a breath of the pure night-air of Dartmoor. Never been there? Ah, well, I don’t suppose you will forget your first visit.”

It was not the unearthly hound which made my first visit of Dartmoor truly memorable. Oh, I doubt that I will ever banish from my nightmares the moment when it emerged from the fog. But besides that hellish creature I saw something even more astounding:

The shattering of Holmes’ mask as an uncaring, unperturbed logician, revealing the human being beneath.

An astounding moment indeed! No one will forget Holmes being so vulnerable, even though he might prefer that everyone does. :-p

That's an interesting point of view to choose. Watson, of course, knows Holmes well and is aware that the mask is only a mask. But Lestrade only sees Holmes in professional circumstances (at this point in time anyway), so seeing him being human would come as a shock.

I really adore the gradual change in Holmes and Lestrade's relationship. The Inspector (well, to be honest, practically whole of Scotland Yard) was not paint in the best light at first. We all know that. And then take post-hiatus stories, in which Lestrade is presented as their friend who stops quite regularly to evening chat at Baker Street - that's really lovely. ^w^
