Warning: purple prose ;)
Author's Notes: The drabble completes the following sentence of Dr. Watson's narrative that got so sharply interrupted by Sherlock Holmes: Right in the middle of them, a little island of ancient culture and comfort, lies this old home, surrounded by a high sun-baked wall mottled with lichens and topped with moss, the sort of wall --"
-- that surrounds a secret garden filled with a riot of pink flowers and gnarled elder bushes. A bench, its paint chipped off by the rain, stands beneath the birches. In summer the air is thick with the smell of roses and grass. Here, invaluable family treasures may be buried – rubies, diamonds, gold sovereigns and guineas – or the innocent but no less valuable secrets of youth, the silk-bound diary, the bundle of lavender-scented letters of love. With the high wall and its air of bygone grandeur and current neglect, The Haven strikes me as the perfect place to hide a crime.
