Is this what it comes to? Corpses and corpuscles?  Sherlock Holmes was not the wilting, affectionate domestic partner Dr. Watson had envisioned in headier days.  She married another, richer man; sadly, also unkind.

Watson skirted the mirror, flinching again at Stamford’s accurate tactlessness. Nut-brown and lathe-thin. He drew himself up, then, determined to find a way forward. Poor devil, indeed.

I love this private look into Watson's head - a bit more than he allows us to see in his narrative perhaps.

I like that you give us a bit of his past - it does seem likely at this point Watson would have known at least one woman he was serious about marrying. And I like that you allow us to see his disappointment over his life and his determination to carry on - meeting Holmes doesn't immediately make everything better.

Nut-brown and lathe-thin... and still weak from the fever, and wounded as well. Poor Watson can't be feeling too good about his romantic prospects now. Even more so if he's just been dumped, which was the fate of many a returning soldier. I never thought of it this way, but it seems plausible!
