… Mike Stanford brought Dr Mary Morstan to 221b Baker Street. He knew Sherlock struggled to pay the rent. He knew of Mary's roommate troubles. And Mary had received a mysterious letter, something to do with her father. Sherlock would be impressed with her precise presentation of facts. She would be intrigued by the skull on the mantle-piece. A perfect match.

I can absolutely see it - what a great idea! (At the end of SIGN, Holmes does say: “I think she is one of the most charming young ladies I ever met and might have been most useful in such work as we have been doing.”)
