IDEN -- A Case of Identity

Holmes might have caviled at risking a woman’s wrath, but we both hated injustice. A break-in at a certain office, a letter written on the self-same typewriter used by Miss Sutherland’s villainous stepfather, a consoling consultation, and a subscription ticket to the policemen’s ball: a prescription that resulted in a much happier and more satisfying conclusion to this ‘petty affair.’

Actually, I don't know if there was one per se. I like to imagine that finding herself an object of attention and gentle admiration (and having the chance to socialize more) gave her the confidence to take more charge of her own life, whether it was to marry someone, or just to not be the dupe of her mother and stepfather! And a policeman's ball would be relatively safe from her stepfather trying a similar trick again - especially with Lestrade, Bradstreet, Hopkins, et al on the lookout for her. There might have even been two other male guests in attendance, keeping an eye out - who knows? ;-)

Yes, she was a very silly lady but deserves a happy ending all the same.

She really did. Yes, she was silly and naive, but she also seemed to be kind, caring, and lonely - and the idea that she was essentially laughed at and dismissed didn't sit well with me.
