Dr Watson looked well. The hard lines of his features were eased, the pervasive hint of sorrow gone from his eyes. Married life suited him. Mrs Watson had been able to accomplish more in one year than landlady and fellow-lodger had in the previous five. They had taught him to live again, but Mary gave him a reason to thrive.

Until I read this, I always took Holmes's remark to be rather cutting, but it could well be that Watson sorely needed that seven pounds! Nice job. :)

A wonderful take on that seemingly disparaging remark of Holmes. Considering the rather positive attitude towards "manly girth" in the late 19th century, I think you are on to something here. ;) Wonderful sentiment in the last line, too.

I wanted to take the sting out of Holmes' comment.
What if Watson's health was still affected and he could use a little more flesh on his bones? And Mary would have done anything in her power to help him. (I'm still recovering from all the florid romanticism in SIGN!)
