CARD -- The Adventure of the Cardboard Box

One sister lost to jealousy, another to brain-fever and guilt. I might’ve been the third sister lost, for grief-stricken horror nearly killed me. But the detective’s doctor friend tended me, and even tried to refuse payment, though his clothes said he didn’t have a copper to spare.

He will eventually. I’ve no family left, and a renewed appreciation for kindness.

Thank you! Watson is inherently kind, and I can't help but think that many of Holmes' clients recognize that quality in him. In Miss Cushing's case, she was left so bereft by the crime, I couldn't see Watson not taking extra care to make sure that she was all right - and she seemed like the kind of character who would return such kindness with interest.
