Vengeance is Mine

I knew that the death of John Openshaw had continued to weigh heavily on Holmes's mind, so when I read that the barque Lone Star had gone down with all hands, I handed him the newspaper without a word.

He read it in silence and sighed. “It seems there is justice in the world after all,” he said at last.

A harsh justice, though perhaps. It looks like the whole crew died, and the "Finns and Germans" may have known nothing about the murders.

Poor Holmes - I imagine young Openshaw's death always stayed with him.

I can well imagine this scene playing out on the 221 Baker Street breakfast table. Thank you for recreating it for us. The senseless murder of John Openshaw is such a shock. I am sure it stayed with both Holmes and Watson for a long time.

Yes...a case which would haunt.

Some justice, but perhaps not much - certainly they weren't held to account for Openshaw's death.
