Watson, I Need You
I wondered why Holmes was so insistent that I should accompany him at a moment's notice. Though it was already very late, I followed him as always, without demur. We drove the whole way to Lee in silence.
When we pulled up outside the house and saw Mrs St. Clair waiting eagerly at the door, I suddenly understood his reason.

She's seems so fond of her husband - so worried about him and so relieved to have received his note. And planning to commit adultery when her husband was missing, possibly murdered, would be extraordinarily cold behaviour.
I think Holmes is simply missing Watson personally, and also missing him being a conductor of light for his cases.

Date: 2015-03-16 07:10 pm (UTC)I read your drabble - perhaps naively - to mean that Holmes realises he is not as helpful around women as Watson is, and he fears that the case will come to a bad end. He needs Watson at his side to deal with Mrs St. Clair's possible breakdown, should bad news arrive. I really like Holmes' concern for Mrs St. Clair in ACD's story, but to me it's clearly the concern of an acquaintance and not of a lover.

Date: 2015-03-16 11:43 pm (UTC)I'm really not comfortable about the theory in the New Annotated that Mrs. St. Clair was after Holmes - but I can agree with your idea of Holmes not understanding her motives and getting the wrong end of the stick. Or simply being uncomfortable at the thought of being alone with a young woman.
