Canon Story: The Blue Carbuncle

A/N: Whoops! A bit late with this one. Considering that this is one of my favourite stories and I love the Granada adaptation, it was surprisingly hard for me to write about it.

'Tis the Season

James Ryder was willing to let Horner take the blame for his theft of the Blue Carbuncle. In turn, he blamed the maid, Catherine Cusak for putting him up to it.

I was surprised that Holmes was willing to let Ryder go as long as Horner was exonerated, but I often wondered what he told the Countess about her maid.

It would seem most unfair to get the maid in trouble while letting Ryder escape. Maybe Holmes had a quiet word with her and she found alternate employment.

It is odd that Holmes doesn't seem to find Catherine Cusack important - if what Ryder says is true, then she's just as guilty. You've raised a very good point - whether or not Holmes believes that Cusack deserves a second chance, surely he can't let the Countess continue to unwittingly employ a thief.

This tale does leave quite a few Issues up in the air...and you set that out well:-)
