Author's Notes: “Between your brandy and your bandage, I feel a new man…” Brandy! The medicine for all ills!


Holmes poured out the brandy and carefully dosed the patient.

“Yes!” beamed Watson. “A healthier colour already!”

Skilfully wielding the knife, he excised the merest sliver, which he passed to Holmes.

Who popped it into his mouth and chewed thoughtfully.

“Mm,” said Holmes eventually, “much better. The new cook is tolerable, but she simply cannot make a decent simnel cake.”

Ah, we have such a fascinating history... ^_^

Couple of links for you: Pre-decimal Sterling (http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/units/money.htm) and Simnel cake (http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/simnelcake_792). Simnel cake is an Easter cake - fruit cake decorated with marzipan. (Not absolutely certain I've ever tried it - not a big fan of fruit cake.) And we swapped over to decimal currency when I was a baby, so the pre-decimal arrangement is almost as confusing to me as it is to you :P

I remember the first time I was in England y'all were pre-decimal. Most of the time I dealt with it by extending a handful of coins and telling shopkeepers to pick the right ones! Whereupon everyone immediately said "Oh, you're an American" and started telling me stories about the War. It was all great fun.
