Upon hearing Victor Hatherley's story, I felt a certain thrill. Who could have provided Col Lysander Stark with a description of the exact man – an orphan, a batchelor, and one desperate enough for work not to question too closely – who was so perfectly suited to his purpose.

Immediately, I perceived the sinister hand of Professor Moriarty behind the whole affair.
