The random crime; a bane to policemen everywhere, and fortunately rarer than one might think from the sensationalist rags of our city. Even so brilliant a man as my friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, cannot make bricks without straw. The unfortunate death of Mr. Willoughby Smith might have remained a mystery but for that priceless clue that betrayed the accidental murderess.
“A simple case, and yet, in some ways, an instructive one,” Holmes remarked, as we travelled back to town. “it hinged for the outset upon the pince-nez. But for the fortunate chance of the dying man having seized these, I am not sure that we could ever have reached our solution.”
