Author's Notes: The Honourable Ronald Adair was the second son of the Earl of Maynooth, at that time governor of one of the Australian colonies. Adair's mother had returned from Australia to undergo the operation for cataract, and she, her son Ronald, and her daughter Hilda were living together at 427, Park Lane.


“Thank you again, Mr. Holmes.” The Countess turned away.

Holmes bowed and we left, Holmes raising a quizzical eyebrow at me. He was puzzled by the suppressed anger that had accompanied the gratitude but I understood, of course. Dear God, I even sympathised with Moran a little!

All three of us had lost someone who would not be miraculously returning.

And the aristocrats are doubly burdened with that ingrained training against expressing any strong emotions like grief, even in private. Lower-classes can cry; we have an Empire to maintain.
