His final utterance woke me from a thought, which I voiced.

“It’s interesting how a well-placed blow to plaster can reveal something so rare and precious whilst a bit of sincere praise and esteem does the same to something presumably as intractable.”

A smile twitched on his lips.

“My dear Watson, how you do love your metaphors. Now, Conk-Singleton…”

Yes, I love that Holmes lets down his reserve for a moment or two. And I think that with all his chronicling, Watson became a bit of literary man by default, looking for symbols and parallels and what not.
