Author’s Note: Inspired by this photo of a porcelain tea cup that has a built-in ledge to protect a gentleman’s moustache from staining.

“… once again the grotesque has deepened into the criminal, Watson.”                                                                                                                                                                  

Mrs. Hudson laid the tray between us. “How right you are, sir. It’s criminal how the doctor abuses his poor moustache.” She turned and handed me my tea. “A new cup for you, sir.”

Holmes glanced across the table and smiled. “As ingenious a solution as ever I conceived.”

Yeah, definitely would need an expert and delicate hand. One hard scrub and I expect that little ledge would be chipped off.
