I had spent a lifetime facing criminals, years accomplishing spywork and sabotage. None of those endeavors had ever rattled my nerves as much as this.

Truly, I must be getting old.

Finally, Watson looked up. “‘Beyond your ken?’” His voice was weak, still so weak. “Holmes, I’ve been in a war!”

“I know. But I couldn’t bear to write that.”

Hey, I like this one very much... and we can all just pretend it's AU or add to our head canon that Lion's Mane totally does take place in 1917 and the original was a typo! :)
