It is with great sadness we record the death of Joseph Whitaker, who in 1869 published the first issue of the invaluable publication Whitaker’s Almanack.  He will be buried in West Norwood Cemetary.  We are delighted to confirm his son, Cuthbert has taken over the role of editor of the Almanack, and we anticipate many further years of successful publication.

The undertaker has promised us a full report, down to feathers on the horses. With no doubt recommendations as to where to order similar should a reader so require.

My condolences to the Whitaker family. But it is nice to hear that Cuthbert Whitaker will be carrying on as editor.

(I gather Cuthbert was the 12th child of 15 - possibly all the more straightforward names were gone then. Could it be that 'Mycroft' and 'Sherlock' Holmes were the 24th and 25th children of an increasingly desperate Mr. and Mrs. Holmes..?) (^^)

It is always a comfort to be able to keep such enterprises within the family.

I suppose it is possible, but in an age of infant/child mortality it was perhaps more common to recycle names in memory of deceased siblings.

No doubt there will be a more fulsome mourning with the report of the funeral. Unfortunately more of our readers are concerned about the continuation of the Almanack than the demise of the editor.
