Jacky sobbed himself to sleep, wishing he could just die.  Father was the only one who had ever loved him, and now father hated him, too.

That horrible woman had never cared a bit for him.

He never understood why he hadn’t been enough, why someone had hurt him and made him so pinched and mean and desperate.  Everything ached.

I'm impressed by how sympathetic a character you make Jack seem here. I do understand him in some ways - he's a disabled child in a society that doesn't value disabled people, and he has no control over his home situation. He couldn't stop his father remarrying and he can't exactly move out. He's powerless really. But harming the baby was an awful thing to do.

Thanks. I did wonder about how 'accidentally' he was disabled, though. It's a fairly violent household, methinks.
