“You should have exposed him, Holmes.”

“I am not retained by the police –“

Watson smacked his pen down so hard that a drop of ink fell on the paper. “Norbertson was foul – an amoral brute who hid his own sister’s death to avoid a well-deserved bankruptcy. Where was your sense of justice?”

That averted gaze… The puzzle, nothing more.

"In any case, my business is that of every other good citizen -- to uphold the law." *all readers of Dr. Watson's tales of Sherlock Holmes raise an eyebrow*

To be fair, Holmes does appear to alert the police at the end of the story after he's uncovered all the facts, and before the race is run. And he seems greatly disapproving of Sir Robert's actions. But I do wonder if he shouldn't have alerted the police as soon as he suspected Lady Falder was dead and that her body had been burnt in the furnace.
