Canon Story: A Study in Scarlet, Pt. 2

There's no soap gets char out of a ceiling. I had plenty else to do that day-- or maybe it was the prospect of twenty-odd more batches of whitewash put the devil in my tongue. "Needn't bother," I muttered, holding the pail for Sal. "Not when..."

She scowled. "Hush!" Kept daubing.

Glad we don't sleep in that house, is all.

A light scene...with a sinister undertone...nicely balanced:-)

Well thought and well written, with a fine last line. I only hope the bull pup didn't keep getting underfoot.

Very nice expansion on that part of the story. I had never thought about it - but the servants must have been aware something was going on. And the fact the narrator doesn't appear to care about John Ferrier and his approaching fate just makes the situation seem all the more real. In this dangerous, unsettled society everyone has to be concerned about their own safety.

Nice! I love getting the viewpoint from unexpected characters.

Well done and though I hadn't thought of it before, it's a great question to approach a story with.

Brr!!! Took me a while to figure out what the scene referenced.

Yeah, if the servants were True Believers they'd take Farrier's money but they'd know what was coming and stay silent.

Fast-forward twenty-some years...

"Oh, my sainted aunts! Why did I ever move to England?" Out with the sponge this time, trying to get blood off a hotel room's wallpaper.
