"No, ma'am, I'm grateful, I am! Yesterday I thought it'd be gaol, or turned out with no character. I said yes to Frank, I didn't see no other option, but now..."

I hugged the girl, and prayed her next mistress would be safer than the last.

Oh, that was a bullet dodged. In those ghastly days a poor girl turned out of a maid job with no reference + 6 months = prostitute.

I know. Even if Lucy escaped being charged with the crime, it's difficult to imagine Mary would have let the whole thing drop, nothing more said. Which would have been a disaster for poor Lucy. :-(

I always feel such sympathy for Lucy Parr. I can forgive Miss Holder the theft and the betrayal of her uncle--she was literally madly in love--but it's harder to forgive her attempt to direct suspicion towards an innocent young woman in a vulnerable position. If she was so desperate for her cousin to be freed, all she had to do was confess.

Yes, I have a hard time forgiving what she tried to do to Lucy, given how few resources Lucy would have had to fight it. However much Holmes' actions helped Arthur and Mr. Holder, he was nearly a godsend for poor Lucy.
