Damn Holmes! Damn him, and damn his astonishing powers of observation. Yes, those self-same powers I have often had occasion to praise. By telling me that he could read my train of thought from where I cast my eyes and how long my gaze lingered he was telling me that he well knew where my mind stood on other matters.
That word we seldom spoke. Our devotion to one another did not require words. The nature of his all-consuming work exposed him constantly to the horrors humans inflict and excuse in service to that single syllable. It made him chary of saying the word, but though it seldom fell from his lips, I read it each day in his eyes.
