While I pretended displeasure when Mr. Holder explained why the coronet was damaged, privately I felt only relief.

Then I received a letter from Mr. Holmes.

Fortunately he is an honorable man; he will tell no one that the beryls are paste, nor how I lost them. But he does not volunteer to find them.

I will have to pay.

It has to be said that the "noble" man does seem very dodgy. I can well imagine that something like this was going on behind the scenes. Wonderful twist.
