One last thought, kicked into his head, never had time to exit. (The dog, silent, could have told him. The boy could have told him, as well.) This horse was no sheep.

Nicely written - and an excellent double-meaning in the title (if a verb, it's Straker's own airy dismissal of possible problems - and if a noun, a rebuke that he is anything but a noble horseman).

I had to wonder if, when Holmes said the Colonel had been "a trifle cavalier," ACD had some similar pun in mind.
