Canon Story: The Speckled Band
Title: Dishonourable Conduct
Author: Castiron
Rating: G
Author's Notes: After the half-pay Army major reads Watson's story....

The Roylott affair first shocked, then shamed me.

I was an officer, willing to lay my life down for Queen and country. And yet, I dismissed the fears of my own affianced, which led to her death -- death avenged by a discharged army doctor and his detective friend.

I pray I never meet them, who acted as I should have.

Thank you for this excellent sidelight. Very good work on the major in 60 words.

Very nice view of a minor character. One does wonder what he thought of the whole affair and your take is very plausible.

What an interesting POV to choose. And it's rather a truthful reaction that the major has - his guilt is so great that he can't face Holmes and Watson, when your first thought is that he might have wanted to thank them.

Oh...that rings true
He won't find the guilt easy to carry.

Wow, what a wonderful angle to take -- this story carries even more hidden tragedies than I ever realized.

That's going to be a tough, tough thing for him to carry. :-(

Poor chap. Yes, we never do find out his reaction to the death.
