Author's Notes: “I can see that you have not slept for a night or two,” said Holmes, in his easy, genial way. “That tries a man’s nerves more than work…”

“‘...and more even than pleasure…’” Watson’s agent looked up. “I’m afraid I don’t quite understand. What..?”

Holmes beamed. “Oh, that’s scientifically proven! I’ve experimented on the Doctor.”

He turned to Watson.

“Remember that delightful weekend away? You were surprisingly tetchy afterwards, dear fellow.”

“Yes...”

Watson winced.

“I had meant to speak to you about that three day Wagner festival, Holmes.”

(A/N: Watson’s aversion to Wagner shamelessly pinched from Small Hobbit. Steal from the best!)

For Holmes, Moriarty; for Watson, Wagner.

Por Watson. But I don't consider the experiment within the parameters. Pleasure?

Oh, good lord, Holmes! How many times do we need to tell you about the scientific power in a sample size of one? Amateurs! All enthusiasm, no rigor.

...and the Watson-hates-Wagner thing is not just smallhobbit, I think. Coules, too, at the very least. (And why not? So much room for comedy!)

I don't think Watson's antipathy to Wagner quite qualifies as a recurring joke, but it comes up now and again. For example, it's in Coules's first version of HOUN, the one from 1988 with Roger Rees and Crawford Logan, during the closing minute of the episode. It's also in the extra-canonical Further Adventures, such as this pair of excerpts from "The Striking Success of Miss Franny Blossom."

(No, I totally didn't excerpt those clips and post them just for this convo, nope.)
