“So this is the best they have to offer? One double-bedded room?”

“How ever shall we manage?”

“Mrs. Douglas was correct.”

“About what?”

“Boardinghouses. Little country inns. There is romance…”

“…there is always romance, my dear man, but she also said there was nothing secret, nothing mysterious.”

We looked at each other, frowning, then shook our heads.

“Perish the thought!”

I like that line of Mrs. Douglas's about romance. I was seeing a bit different, that mystery (cases) are at the heart of Holmes & Watson's romance and to have a straightforward courtship like the one Mrs. Douglas describes is not to their liking. But yeah your take is valid. There romance couldn't be out in the open like she supposes.

Yes, I'm pretty sure every inn that these two turn up at, there's mystery somewhere. And (in my mind) also romance.
