“To pierce the veil?”
“No! I just said that I need time for that! I am straining to see what’s in the street. To pierce the film on these filthy windows. I must have a word with Mrs. Hudson about the new girl.”
“For God’s sake, no! Let me do it!”

I'm not sure what happened prior but I'm sure Holmes' concern about the state of tidiness was not met with joy. Perhaps Watson is the greater diplomat on the domestic front.
