Holmes let out a bark of laughter. “My dear, you spent your introduction describing her clothes! What non-inverted man does that?”

Clearly Doyle's writer's attention to detail, too (and his appreciation for women as people). He does a similar job of describing Grimesby Roylott's attire in SPEC, which helps establish his character.

Couldn't resist the summary! (I've written stories about and regarding Mary Morstan-Watson, but I've also used the premise that she's a fictional construct to preserve the safety of Holmes and Watson's relationship.)

He could be that rare bird, a straight male fashion designer. Watson (like Doyle) does come off as liking women as people.
