Mary laughed. “The poor man fears losing his comrade to wedlock. He is wrong.” My expression redoubled her mirth. “John, a woman who marries a knight-errant knows that his king comes first.”

I stared. “Do you mean that?”

“I expressly forbid you to desert Mr. Holmes!”

I bowed my head, heart pounding. “Yes, Mrs. Watson.”

Every Army spouse of that time knew that another woman (Her Majesty) would always take precedence over her. A logical leap to see that Watson is still in very active, if unofficial, military service with Holmes as his commander.

One of my favorite things about Mary is the way that she believes in the importance of Watson's work and friendship with Holmes. I love that she doesn't turn their marriage into a competition with the other important parts of Watson's life, but instead embraces and supports the whole. It takes a self-confident, unconventional, and loving woman to see Holmes's importance and not take it as a threat. A beautiful foundation for a marriage that leaves room still for adventure and comradeship. Well chosen, John and Mary! Thank you for celebrating that side of this romance :)
