I have deduced where my prey will show; now I need only wait out the long night for the game to come to the watering-hole. Utter stillness, ennui and tension minute by minute, for hours.

But most of all I long for Watson's company. This, though hazardous, would have been a kinder vigil than the one that produced a serpent.

I like the theory that Holmes asked Watson to stay with him at Stoke Moran (even though he doesn't actually DO anything at all in SPEC), because he's morbidly terrified of snakes and needs the moral support.

But I suppose he had to be sure that Phelps was kept away - and he perhaps couldn't just tell Phelps what was going on because he couldn't be certain of his reaction.

I can see Watson pop up behind the furious Joseph Harrison groping at his belt, holding something up. "Is this your knife, sir?"

"What th-! How did you GET that away from me?"

"Army training, blackguard!" THUMP! POW! SMACK!
