I kept both notes: Holmes’s amongst my personal possessions; Moriarty’s thrust deep into my late friend’s records.

When Holmes returned, I reread his ‘last’ message with a mixture of sadness and joy.

And I read Moriarty’s final words with almost pity. As he wrote the lies about the dying woman, he himself was approaching his end.

Did he know? Perhaps.

My thoughts are that Watson, consciously or unconsciously, was following Holmes' lead when he kept the fake letter from Moriarty. Watson saw it as part of the 'case' and believed it should be preserved in the records - even though he thought at that point Holmes would never be looking through the records ever again.

Moriarty would no doubt have seen the possibility - one more risk he was prepared to take.

He does seem as fatalistic as Holmes - setting off to have a fight at the top of a dangerous waterfall ^^"

It would be in character for Watson to keep such a note - and even to reflect afterward with a thread of pity for the doomed man.

My thoughts are that, in some sense, Watson was following Holmes' lead in keeping Moriarty's fake letter. It was part of the 'case' and so should be preserved - even though Watson thought Holmes wouldn't be looking at those records ever again.

And Watson went through losing Holmes and then losing Mary. Perhaps when Holmes eventually came safely back from that encounter at the falls, Watson would be able to feel a little pity for the man that didn't.
